Ako Para Sa Bata, the biggest gathering of individuals and organizations working to protect Filipino children, hosted almost 1,000 educators, medical practitioners, social workers, lawyers, and law enforcers at its annual conference on December 1 and 2, 2015.
Organized by Child Protection Network (CPN), together with TAO Corporation, Office of Cybercrime of the Department of Justice, and UNICEF Philippines, this year’s APSB revolved around Cyber Safety of Children: Internet and Mobile Protection for Minors, and how the changing times and fast-paced technology pose challenges that are more complicated than ever.
Making bigger strides in cyberprotection of children
The Philippines is making big steps in cyberprotection of children. Dorothy Rozga of ECPAT International says Ako Para Sa Bata is the most comprehensive conference on the cyberprotection of children she’s seen yet.
Rozga also mentioned that the country is active in global talks of cybersecurity and effectively following through. In September 2015, President Benigno Aquino III signed Executive Order No. 189 that allows for the creation of the National Cybersecurity Inter-Agency Committee (NCIAC). The Philippines is also a delegate at the WeProtect Summit 2015 held in Abu Dhabi, UAE where countries commit to a model national response to protect children from online sexual exploitation.
It is also in this conference that national researches on violence against children and the emerging global problem of online child sexual abuse will be presented for the first time. “This is not just a conference but a platform that creates flows of knowledge, developing new insights leading to innovations that can change the core of how we do things,” said Dr. Madrid. “We are on the cusp of a new dawn in child protection in the Philippines and we are all part of it.”
