On March 8, the main office of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Quezon City, with the cooperation of Barangay Sucol, Calamba City and Calamba Women’s and Men’s Brigade organizations joined forces to celebrate the International Women’s Day, with the national theme, “Women Today: Weathering Climate Change, Governance and Accountability.”
More than 50 members of these organizations brought their dustpans, brooms and garbage bags for the clean-up drive at some places at Barangay Sucol. The clean-up drive was the first event of the PIA for this occasion. According to Leonila Galang, a resident, they could help the community through: “Paglilinis, magtatanim ng halaman upang panangga sa baha, tumulong sa ibang programs ng bayan, tumulong upang maiwasan ang dengue sa mga bata upang makaiwas sa sakit na diarrhea at upang maging malinis ang kapaligiran.”
On a related note, the community of women in Barangay Sucol, over 5,000 strong, together with over 2,000 registered voters under the wife of Captain Adriano Galang, are asking the government for their livelihood needs, especially for the women without work and jobs for their children. They are also seeking assistance for starting a livelihood program. Some of them live beside the railroad, with kids to feed. The cooperative to which they belong has more than 1,000 members all around Calamba City.
